Advice

The second you became their manager you forfeited the right to joke around in any capacity about their employment at the company. Even though you still feel like a pal joking around, even though the fact that you’d make the joke at all is a testament to your discomfort with having to make firing decisions, it’s not something you can ever joke about. People don’t find it funny because it’s not funny.

  • Being bad at process is one of the easiest ways to lose credibility and good talent.
  • YOU are in charge of a process being followed. If your process isn’t being followed fully or it’s causing disruption, frustration, or resentment, that is YOUR fault. Fix it.
  • Great processes have automatic triggers, clear actions, and effective review.

waking up early really gives you two main benefits: 1) it lets you have more time to prepare your mind and body for work 2) it lets you live part of your day outside the shadow of work. I recommend it to anyone that’ll listen.

In practice this seems to happen quite often. Some would say every time. To understand why, we need to remember Jussi's law of programmers:

The problem with programmers is that if you give them the chance, they will start programming.

I’ll be working to educate myself, and break my own patterns of ignorance. This sense of urgency is, embarrassingly, new to me, so I have a lot to learn – which organizations to support, what books to read, what history to absorb, and who to listen to. I’m starting on that today. If you’re like me, I hope you’ll do the same.

This is also the reason why it’s important that everyone wears a mask or other face covering when they are in a shared space. Unfortunately, I’m still seeing people at the supermarket with their mouths uncovered, potentially spreading the virus everywhere. Masks are such a simple, low cost intervention that can be implemented immediately using something as basic as a t-shirt or scarf. It’s not a perfect solution, but covering your mouth reduces both the radius of spread, and quantity of droplets emerging from your mouth. Again, even if we are only stopping 80% of the viral particles, that could be enough to save someone’s life. It’s confusing to me that we’ve implemented harsh and expensive lockdown measures, but have been slow to implement a basic mask mandate.

Book Recommendation

Poor Charlie's Almanac has been on my reading list for the last couple of years. It took me a six-month sabbatical (and then some) to get through it. This is a testament to the information, lessons, references and stories from Charlie Munger. Fundamentally, this book is an encyclopedia of information on what it takes to be successful and to achieve greatness in what it is you want to do in life; all from a very successful and extremely well read (and connected) 90-ish year old billionaire!
Let's be clear, this is not a book that you can quickly skim through, but rather a book you spend quality time with every day; for a good couple of months. This way you're giving yourself the best change of retaining all of Charlie's tidbits of wisdom. One of the great things about this book is the plethora of quotes from successful entrepreneurs, historians, philosophers alike whose ideas and writings have survived the test of time.
Suffice to say, this is one of those books I'm going to re-read, reference and quote for the rest of my life. Well worth a purchase!
Three Key Takeaways from the book:1. Charlie knows no wise people who didn't read all the time. It is more than just reading though, one has to grab ideas and do sensible things. Most people do not identify ideas, and if they do, they do not know what to do with them2. Diversification in investing is something that Charlie doesn't believe in. His recommendation is to choose three good company stocks and invest accordingly. Interesting approach given most financial advisors typically recommend the opposite3. Self-pity is always counter-productive, It's the wrong way to think. And when you avoid it you get a great advantage over everybody else or almost everybody else, because self-pity is a standard response. And you can train yourself out of it

Hi! Here's a brief tutorial about how to start using Quotebacks.

Quotebacks are like quote-retweets for any piece of writing on the internet, using simple web-native technology. here's what one looks like:

For Spring Boot 2.2 +

mvn spring-boot:run -Dspring-boot.run.jvmArguments="-Dsystem_property1=value1 -Dsystem_property2=value2 -Dsystem_property3=value3"

For Spring Boot 1.5 and less

Use -Drun.jvmArguments instead of -Dspring-boot.run.jvmArguments from the above example

If there is a way to avoid system properties, it is the best way forward. For more information on this externalizing the properties in spring boot

Configurations are Spring Boot's core feature and idea is to do less in the code and more in the configuration. There is a bit of convention on the directory structure that one has to follow for the spring boot to get up and running. If you don't follow these basics, you are using the Spring Boot the wrong way.

Cheers!!

Lesson 2: Computer Basics for Kids

  • Charles Babbage he designed Victorian-era computer called the Analytical Engine around 1880.
  • Back then, computer was a mechanical thing
  • Refer this link for more reading on original computer Babbage Analytical Engine
  • Transistor is an important invention that made big computers to small ones that you can hold in your hands like your smartphones.
  • It is helping the computer to understand “Zeros” 0s and “Ones” 1s.
  • All keyboard and mouse interactions will be converted finally to zeros and ones.
  • Compiler/Interpretors = software will convert to machine language ( 0s and 1s)
  • Today you can type something in another country and it can be available in any other country in this world. How ? By using Internet
  • You can connect two different computers , through wires. This means computers are in network
  • We can connect 2 different computers in your home. Lets call it Home Network , lets give it a name e.g: “ Alpha”.
  • You friend can connect two computers in his home, lets name it “ Beta”
  • Now we can connect Alpha and Beta together. This is called Inter connected Network – short form – INTERNET

Lesson 1: Computer Basics for Kids

  1. Computer – Computing machine.
  2. Hardware + Software
  3. Hardware = CPU, Keyboard, Mouse, Motherboard, Hard Disk , RAM etc
  4. Software = Chrome Browser , Zoom etc

  5. Program = set of instructions given to a computer machine, which would be understood by the machine. e.g: input number 1 , input number 2 , now add them and save it to C location. e.g : Amma I need dosa , I need masala dosa, I need Hot, at 8:00 pm and place it in the dining table. ( Amma can reject if you didnt do your homework)

  6. You store somewhere. Permanent Storage vs Temporary Storage.

  7. Writing in your notebook vs Writing in your Blackboard =. Permanent storage vs Temporary Storage. = Hard Disk (permanent ) Vs RAM( temporary)

  8. Take a Program ( written in english ) – > Compiler/Interpretor – > language which computer machine can understand but you cannot understand

Lets say you have Map<String,Integer> map = new HashMap<>() and now we want to sort the map (ascending / descending ) based on values. So we can use stream to do that in java 1.8+

//Ascending order

Map<String, Integer> sortedMap = map.entrySet()
.stream()
.sorted(Map.Entry.comparingByValue())
.collect(Collectors.toMap(Map.Entry::getKey, Map.Entry::getValue, (e1, e2) -> e1, LinkedHashMap::new));

// descending order

  final List<Map.Entry<String, Integer>> reverseSortedMap = map.entrySet()
.stream()       .sorted(Map.Entry.comparingByValue(Comparator.reverseOrder()))
.collect(Collectors.toMap(Map.Entry::getKey, Map.Entry::getValue, (e1, e2) -> e1, LinkedHashMap::new));

This will come handy when you can use TreeMap which sorts using key but not value.
